Let preemies feel love this World Prematurity Day

Remember the first moments after your little one was born? The oh-so-gentle touch, the overwhelming newborn smell, the joyful sense that life as you knew it would never quite be the same? For some those moments are heaven, but for parents of 15 million preemie babies born worldwide, prematurity is often a challenge.

Despite advancements made in prenatal care in the UK, parents need emotional support as they feel helpless because they have no control over their baby’s wellbeing: not being able to touch or hold their baby affects their early bonding experience.

Beyond the UK, preemie babies can face different challenges such as limited access to the appropriate quality care. Better access to clean, well-equipped health facilities staffed by skilled health workers could drastically improve survival rates.

The power of touch

This year, as well as donating the softest preemie nappies to hospitals and parents across the UK, Pampers is touching the lives of preemie babies and their families in the UK and internationally, partnering with Bliss and UNICEF to ensure the littlest lives throughout the UK and the world are getting the best possible support.

In the UK, Pampers will help enable moments of “touch” for both parents and baby by supporting their Bliss Champions programme, which offers emotional support to parents of premature and sick babies on neonatal units across the UK. In other countries, Pampers is also supporting UNICEF’s work for preemie babies and their families so they can have better access to medicine and essential healthcare to contribute to improving the survival chances of 1.7million babies.

A warning in the email that linked to this article for parents of premature babies would have been nice. As a mum of a 27 weeker who saw her baby on a ventilator, spent 95 days in NICU, and is still on oxygen, this was triggering for me. The first minutes after my little one was born were spent wondering if he was ever going to cry, I don't know that newborn smell my child had, and didn't get that sense of joy. Please think about the families you're sending this content to as they might not be ready to see/read/hear how term parents had such a lovely birth story.
